Motherhood is about life. I had an expecting mother in the office one day and she was fearful of the birthing process. She thought the pain would be too great and the cost to her personal health would be very significant. She said that she had been praying about it, but had not gotten the peace she was hoping for as of yet. I told her giving birth may be the closest thing to a Christ-like experience that any of else will ever go through. She asked for an explanation. I said, "The Bible tells us that Jesus came to bring life, and to bring it more abundantly. To do so, He had to endure pain to make a way for that abundant life." She instantly understood why she was given this calling and was grateful for the peace and purpose that she now embraced.
But the struggle of motherhood is still very real. It requires patience, wisdom, and balance. With this month's focus on mothers, we wanted to talk about the benefits of seeing a chiropractor during the various stages of motherhood. You may be wondering...What does chiropractic care have to do with motherhood?
Expect to see your chiropractor when you’re expecting
Believe it or not, a lot of women go to see their local chiropractors during their pregnancies, especially women who are searching to have a natural delivery after having had a cesarean delivery. The benefits of going to see a chiropractor during your pregnancy come from having the healthiest alignment of the birthing canal, which can make the delivery quicker and less painful.
Most complications of delivery are a result of the infant’s position in the woman’s pelvis. Making sure that spine and the pelvis are completely aligned is a great way to make sure that your baby has a clear pathway through the pelvis and out of the birth canal. Also, making regular appointments to the chiropractor can help eliminate the back pain that comes from holding the majority of your weight in your midsection.
Motherhood
Being a mother is certainly not easy. Motherhood takes a lot of bending down, picking up, and holding your little one for long periods of time. Then, while holding your little one, you need to get creative to accomplish things in your daily life. The most popular hold for busy mothers is the hip hold (letting your child sit on the side of your hip while you hold them with one arm). This hold is great if you need to accomplish something where you need a free hand, but it’s extremely harmful to your posture.
Typically, when holding a child, women put their entire weight on one hip, which ends up curving the spine in an unnatural way. Because of this, a woman experiences back pain throughout the various stages of her child’s growth, with the pain likely worsening as the child grows.
Receiving regular alignments can take the pressure off of the mother’s spine, fix her posture, and reduce her pain.
What about your babies?
Typically, adults seek chiropractic help for the everyday stresses on the body, but they don’t consider how seeing a chiropractor can help their little ones. All mother's would say that giving birth can be traumatic, but they often don't consider that being born can be traumatic. The transition from womb to world can expose the new born to forces that they have never experienced before, which can create small misalignments that need to be addressed to prevent the baby from dealing with complications to the nervous system.
Beyond helping the mother directly, regular adjustments can also help children. Studies have shown that regular chiropractic adjustments can help children with all sorts of disorders, even with mood and digestion. So if you have a little one who suffers from tummy troubles, feeding issues, poor sleep, colic, bowel problems, or other common complaints, we may just need to correct the misalignments so that your precious baby can live their best life.
